I want to be like Grace Kelly

22 Feb

Dear Future Hubby,

I’ve been in a bit of a funk for the past week or so.  I’m not sure if it’s a  “I’m kinda sick” funk or if it’s caused by some other crap going on, but regardless, I just haven’t been my usual peppy self. Something that ALWAYS cheers me up though and brings a little smile to my face is looking at wedding dresses.  It’s the same joy I get from sitting on the floor in Barnes & Noble leafing through bridal magazines or hijacking a stack from a friend’s house. They are just fun to look at. So since I’m in this so called funk, what better way to try and get out of it that look at wedding dresses.

Grace Kelly = My Style Icon

I know, I know. You’re not supposed to see the dress before the wedding, or so the superstition goes.  Speaking as a traditionalist, you’ll find it odd that I’m actually ok with you seeing the dress before the wedding. Sure, I don’t have it picked out yet. I won’t until we’re actually engaged and planning Gaelic Gala or whatever wedding we’re having.  But I’m actually one of those brides, who I see more and more of these days, that are totally on board with having their future hubby see their dress before the ceremony, for various different reasons. What reasons? Well, here’s the run down…

  1. Dude, it’s a total time saver to take pictures BEFORE the ceremony. Seriously, my make up won’t be ruined by the inevitable crying I’ve done during the ceremony. Everyone looks so fresh and so clean, clean. It’s a win win. Then our guests won’t be waiting around for an hour and a half or some ungodly amount of time. I’ve found that when this happens, people get smashed before dinner even starts. Big no no. You’re supposed to get slightly buzzed before dinner starts, keep drinking through dinner, and by the time dancing rolls around, you’re wasted enough to start a conga line on the dance floor.
  2. We know you won’t clash.  I know what you’re thinking. How can anything clash with white?  Little secret for you…there are SEVERAL shades of white and several different colors for suits and tuxes these days. Some of these look great together.  Others…not so much.  There is no way in hell we are going to clash. End of story.
  3. Your opinion actually does matter to me.  This is honestly the most important to me. I am my own person, perfectly capable of making my own choices in life.  We may not be getting married if this wasn’t the case.  But at the end of the day, what you think about certain things matters a lot to me. I wouldn’t be marrying you if it didn’t.  Sure, you may do the guy thing and tell me I look great in anything and that you love every dress, like most guys do when faced with that question.  But I really do want your opinion because when it comes down to it, this day is about you and me. Not how pretty the flowers were, not how your Uncle Tim tried to hit on the waitress, not how the chicken was dry. You know how in 27 Dresses, the favorite part of a wedding for both James Marsden and Katherine Heigl is the look on the grooms face when the bride walks down the aisle?  That’s my favorite part too. And since I’ll be looking at you and you’ll be looking at me, I’d rather that look not be in horror because you hate my dress.

Just add pockets and this would be pretty close to perfect.

So here’s what I’m thinking.  There are various different things that I want my dress to encompass, though at the end of the day, I’m not sure all will be entirely possible.  For example, I LOVE pockets on dresses. No joke, they rock and I’ll totally have some place to put my Blackberry. Kidding…kinda. I also adore lace, but I’m not sure I want an entirely lace dress.  That’s still up for discussion and I’m not sure that Lace & pockets go together. Things I hate and do not want. Strapless: some girls can pull it off, I cannot.  Ball gowns: I do not want to be Hilary Duff in A Cinderella Story. It’s just not me. Beading: Not a huge fan of the gown that are crusted over in rhinestone. Honestly, if I was a stick, I would totally just have Grace Kelly’s dress remade with pockets, shorter sleeves, and a sweetheart neckline because it has everything I want in a dress and it could totally be made with pockets.  It would just need a different waist line, which I’m sure is not entirely out of the question and totally findable. Ivanka Trump had the right idea when she had her dress made in the fashion of Grace’s dress.

Take this with a grain of salt though. I’m a girl. I change my mind often so who knows what I’ll actually like a year from now, a month from now, hell, even tomorrow. I just promise I will NEVER make you dress up in a crazy get up like Prince Rainer.

Love,

Your future wife
